Things To Do at Chatsworth House

Most guests spend at least a full day at Chatsworth — there's more to it than a single visit covers.

The house itself contains one of the finest private art collections in Britain, across 30 showrooms. The current Duke and Duchess still live in part of the house. Allow 2–3 hours minimum.

The gardens were designed by Capability Brown and Joseph Paxton and cover 105 acres. The cascade, the Emperor Fountain, the kitchen garden and the cottage garden are all worth time. The gardens alone justify the visit.

The farmyard and adventure playground is genuinely one of the best in the region — particularly good for families with children under 12.

The estate walks are free and open year-round. The river path from Bolton Gates to the house, the loop up through the park above the house, and the woodland walk on the far side of the estate are all excellent. Dogs welcome on leads throughout.

The farm shop and restaurant are among the best in the country. Worth visiting even if you're not doing the house — the butcher counter, the cheese selection and the bakery section are exceptional. Pick something up for a cottage dinner or a packed lunch on the walk back.

Events run throughout the year and are worth planning around. Check out what's happening this year. Chatsworth House 2026
